I feel qualified to answer this, because I was last awarded the prize of Esperantist of the Year! There is a nominating committee that chooses candidates and then a jury who votes on these candidates. Everyone in both bodies tend to be older, so if you were focused on winning this prize, you should do something for the Esperanto community that has an impact ...

Here are seven important names that immediately come into my mind (ordered by how important I consider their current or very recent contributions to be): Katalin Kováts, the leader of edukado.net, a web platform for teachers of Esperanto with a lot of useful material. She invests an incredible amount of time and energy into edukado.net, without any ...

I will try to build a somewhat objective answer based on the information you gave us : 8 days as of this writing of this : since you are a beginner, it will probably be easier for you if you can ask questions in English. For this, you can use the Duolingo Esperanto Learners group in Facebook, Esperanto Stack Exchange, and the group Esperanto - English in ...

The father of George Soros, Tivadar Soros (in Esperanto: Teodoro Ŝvarc), was an active Esperanto speaker and writer. George learned Esperanto in his home as a child, but not as a native language. George used Esperanto in order to leave Hungary in 1947: He first participated in the Universala Kongreso in Switzerland, and then continued to Britain instead of ...

An article was recently published (in Interlinguistica Tartuensis IX, 2009) concerning Esperanto insults, which included a list of a few dozen recorded from the late 1980s.

Measuring numbers of Esperanto speakers is notoriously difficult, but UEA does publish some enlightening figures about its member countries, including African ones. Judging by UEA members, the most active country is Togo, with 28 UEA members. Judging by members of the national organisation, Benin is on top, reporting 500 members of the national Esperanto ...

There is this site called Esperanto Language Stack Exchange that I heard is pretty good.

Just to talk a bit about my experience as a beginner: I encountered Esperanto at the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin. Afterwards, I kept in contact with these people. Then I used Duolingo Esperanto Learners, another group and the Duolingo forum... Don't forget that you can use YouTube for listening and interaction, too! You can even make your own channel! ...

Definitely grown with Duolingo for En>Eo. After Espana>Eo the growth is gone to +0.7 million/year (projected on current trend). Portuguese (keen learners) is hatching @ 7%. My Duolingo EN>EO cumulative growth snapshots since Sep'16: +930/day on 11Nov, +1100/day on 14Dec, +1200/day on 14Jan... +1350/day current. Espana>EO (some in both EN/ES>EO) +747/...

I haven't heared Volapukisto used as an insult, though it is used in jokes instead of mentioning the nationality of a person.

One site that I've used in the past, and has been around for a long time, is http://lernu.net. It looks like the site has had a complete redesign since the last time I used it, but I think all the same content is available.

The Vikipedia article you linked to appears to be a reposting of an article in Libera Folio. Both versions of the article contain the following line: La sola konata ligo inter Esperanto kaj Norda Koreio dum la lastaj jaroj estis Asocio por Amikeco kun Koreujo, KFA, fondita en la jaro 2000. The web site in question appears to have been taken down. (The ...

As someone who has actively used Esperanto for 18 years and has regularly attended Esperanto meetings targeted at Esperanto families for eight years, I know about 100 native speakers personally. I am very confident that there are at the very least three times as many native speakers in the world (i.e. at the very least 300), but probably more like 10 to 20 ...

Members of the EAB don't have automatic individual membership of the UEA though members of the EAB are associated members. There is a service which allows you to pay your UEA membership fee by sending a cheque to the EAB, I guess this was useful in the past.

Once again I'm reminded of my saying Esperanto Wasn't Born Yesterday™. Esperanto has a 130 year history and is not going to succeed or fail based on what happened in 2016. Ultimately we run into the same problems when we try to define how many speakers there are. What is a learner and how do we count them? Your request for "official" data is a little odd, ...

From anecdotal experience, I find there are two main reasons: People come from a geeky technical background and really like the idea of a “logical” language. I think this explains why there is maybe a disproportionately high number of computer programmers in the Esperanto movement. Idealistic people who are attracted by the language’s ideals about uniting ...

Your chances are 100%. The Reta aliĝilo is just saying that in Rotterdam they have closed the books for Congress registrations. They are busy with compiling the Kongresa libro with the program details and the names of the participants. They are no more able to help with accommodation, excursions, etc. Just book your flight and hotel. You will be warmly ...

UEA has two kinds of members, individuaj membroj (individual members) and ...

In Germany, members of the German Esperanto Association (GEA) are counted as "corporate" members within UEA. UEA does only offer directly its services to individual members. The number of corporate members is only important for balancing the importance of different countries in elections for the "komitato".

Also, see this interview with Humphrey Tonkin about George Soros and Esperanto: The Billionaire Native Esperanto Speaker?

His father was an Esperantist and, apparently, taught his son Esperanto during his childhood. Soros is often given as an example of native Esperanto speaker, although I am not 100% convinced it is true (if someone knows a source about this claim, I'd be glad to see it). Even if it is, Soros is not involved with Esperanto today. If you heard someone proposing ...

I guess nobody will be able to give certain numbers about this, as Esperanto speakers (and their children, some of whom might grow up as native Esperanto speakers) are distributed all over the world and don't have to register as Esperanto speakers at any central authority. While there might be censuses in some countries, not all of them will ask about spoken ...
