The reference to the Romance languages is interesting. In French ci ("here") is used in ceci (as opposed to cela) and celui-ci and such playing the same role as ĉi. I prefer ĉi as modifying adverb before the corellative. Note also ĉiuj ĉi (more frequent I think) and ĉi ĉiuj.
